TODAYâs TOPIC
4 Career mistakes women make (The what)
Why
How to address
WHAT & WHY
Many women unknowingly make certain choices (âmistakesâ) that hold their career back. Here are these:
Neglecting their personal life:
Why: Combination of societal & self induced pressure results in their work overshadowing their personal life. As a result, women have trouble saying no to work.
Avoiding risks:
Why: Many women worry about how they will be perceived if they take risks. They worry about being seen as less competent if they were to fail.
Failing to self advocate:
Why: Many women experience self-doubt which makes it difficult for them to advocate for themselves. This self-doubt can stem from societal expectations, past experiences, or internalized beliefs.
Skipping mentorship:
Why: Balancing work, family & personal commitments leaves women with little time to seek out & engage in mentorship relationships.
HOW TO ADDRESS
Good news is that the choice is yours and you hold the power!
Here is what to do instead:
Work-life integration:
I have found the term work life balance to be a myth. In todayâs digital world, what we need to master is work-life integration.
Set boundaries: Block time for your non-negotiables in your calendar first.
Prioritize self-care: Block time for weekly activities that rejuvenate you.
Delegate: Learn to let go of perfection & share responsibilities at home & work.
Risk taking:
Risk taking often doesnât come naturally to most people. So practice the following.
Reframe risks as opportunities: View risks as chances for growth & learning.
Build a support network: Surround yourself with supportive colleagues & friends that encourage risk taking.
Celebrate small wins: Acknowledge & celebrate every win regardless of its size & impact.
Self-advocacy:
Self-advocacy is a learned skill, one you get better at with practice.
Practice assertiveness: Start with small acts of self-advocacy & build upon them.
Seek feedback: Regularly ask for feedback from colleagues, managers & mentors. Donât wait for formal reviews, be proactive here.
Use âIâ statements: Communicate your desires & needs clearly by using âIâ statements such as âI needâŠâ
Mentorship:
Mentorships are great learning & growth opportunities. So seek them out proactively.
Make time for mentorship: Schedule coffee or lunch meetings few months in advance so that it is not an after thought.
Join professional networks: Engage in industry networks & online communities to find potential mentors. Diversification of mentors is key.
Be proactive: Take initiative & reach out to potential mentors. Share with them what you are seeking, why you are seeking & most importantly what you will bring to the table for them.
