Confidence Isn’t the Problem
What I saw inside corporate last month

Confidence Isn’t the Problem
Before the workshops last month with a global team at Kaizen Institute, I asked one question:
“Where do you hold back at work?”
The answers were almost identical.
Meetings.
Speaking up.
Sharing a different perspective.
Asking a question without overthinking it.
Different roles.
Different people.
Same moment.
What’s actually happening
On paper, these are confident, capable professionals.
They know their work.
They’ve earned their seat.
They’re trusted to contribute.
And yet, in those moments, they hold back.
Not completely.
Just enough to miss the window.
Why it keeps happening
Most people think it’s a confidence issue.
It’s not.
In those moments, your nervous system steps in.
There’s visibility.
There’s uncertainty.
There’s a chance you might get it wrong.
So you pause.
You think about how it’ll land.
You wait for a better moment.
You tell yourself you’ll come back to it.
And then… you don’t.
How to start shifting it
This is where we focused during the workshops.
Not on “being more confident.”
But on catching the moment right before you pull back.
That split second where you go from:
“I could say something…”
to
“Maybe I’ll wait.”
That moment is everything.
So instead of asking:
“How do I become more confident?”
Try this:
“Can I notice when I’m about to hold back?”
No fixing.
No forcing.
Just noticing.
That’s where the shift starts.
One of the leaders shared this after:
“Jaspreet provided a fascinating and practical perspective on the neuroscience behind our reactions in challenging workplace situations… while offering actionable techniques to reframe our thinking and build confidence. Her engaging approach made complex concepts accessible and highly relevant to our day-to-day work challenges.”
Most people try to solve this by doing more.
More preparation.
More thinking.
More proving.
But the real shift happens earlier.
In the moment where you either step forward…
or quietly step back.
If this shows up for you,
notice the next time it happens.
That’s enough to start.
