The Hidden Cost of Being “Easy to Work With”
How small communication habits change how your work is valued

The Hidden Cost of Being “Easy to Work With”
Being “easy to work with” isn’t neutral.
It changes how you’re seen at work.
Not as kind.
Not as thoughtful.
As someone whose time and ideas are flexible.
WHAT
It usually shows up in small ways.
Things you don’t think twice about:
Turning statements into questions
Explaining more than needed
Saying yes right away
Softening what you actually think
Asking for approval instead of deciding
None of these feel like a problem.
On their own, they aren’t.
But together?
They create a pattern.
WHY
Because communication doesn’t just express your thinking.
It shapes how it’s received.
When your language:
sounds unsure
invites validation
signals flexibility
People respond accordingly.
Not intentionally.
But consistently.
Your ideas feel optional.
Your time feels negotiable.
Your decisions feel open for input.
And over time, that becomes your baseline.
HOW (Quick Win)
Don’t try to fix everything at once.
Pick one pattern.
Clean it up.
That’s it.
For example:
Instead of:
“Sure, I can do it.”
Say:
“I can take this on next week.”
Instead of:
“Just a thought…”
Say:
“Here’s what I recommend.”
Instead of:
“Does this look okay?”
Say:
“I’m moving forward with this.”
Same idea.
Different signal.
This isn’t about being less kind.
It’s about being clearer.
Because confidence here isn’t about volume.
It’s about removing anything
that weakens your point before it lands.
Start noticing where this shows up for you this week.
Pick one pattern. Say it differently.
See what shifts. That’s where it starts.
